Timothy P. Roth
The Present State of Consumer Theory

— y.
Publisher: —
Description: The neoclassical theory of choice is an integral part of a large and growing literature. Its elegance, simplicity and apparent generality appear, increasingly, to influence the thinking of psychologists, sociologists, and political scientists. At the same time, the theory is subject to robust attack. The theme of the book is that the critics have it right. Account must be taken of the endogeneity of preference and value structures, of decision makers` cognitive limitations, of information asymmetries, ofopportunistic behavior, and of positive transaction and decision costs. Yet these considerations militate against the specification of both the efficiency frontier and the Social Welfare Function. This, in turn, suggests that Social Welfare Theory is an inappropriate guide for the formulation of distributional and other economic policies. A corollary is that economists` (and others) attention should center less on `getting the prices right` and more on `getting the institutions right`. [detailed...]

Description: Book Description `Noe says, -I must build a boat. -A boat, she says. -A ship, more like. I`ll need the boys to help, he adds as an afterthought. -We`re leagues from the sea, she says, or any river big enough to warrant a boat. This conversation is making Noe impatient. -I`ve no need to explain myself to you. -And when you`re done, she says carefully, we`ll be taking this ship to the sea somehow? As usual, Noe`s impatience fades quickly. -We`ll not be going to the sea. The sea will be coming to us.` In this brilliant debut novel, Noah`s family (or Noe as he`s called here)-his wife, sons, and daughters-in-law-tell what it`s like to live with a man touched by God, while struggling against events that cannot be controlled or explained. When Noe orders his sons to build an ark, he can`t tell them where the wood will come from. When he sends his daughters-in-law out to gather animals, he can offer no directions, money, or protection. The President Is Shot!: The Assassination of Abraham Lincoln

2004 y.
Publisher: Boyds Mills Press
Description: Gr. 5-8. A page-turner of a text, a fascinating array of photos and archival illustrations, and an event that changed the course of history: all these elements combine in this strong, highly readable book. Holzer, the author of Abraham Lincoln: The Writer (2000) as well as numerous books about the Civil War for adults, does a fine job of condensing and shaping information about the assassination for young readers, beginning rather breathlessly on the day Lincoln died in an unassuming boarding house across from Ford`s Theater. From there, he moves back in time, introducing Lincoln as a determined if weary leader, who gained the North`s respect. But Holzer also explains why Lincoln was despised, filling in details of the South`s destruction and demoralization. Taking advantage of the volatile mix was actor John Wilkes Booth, a lover of the South and a supporter of slavery, who, not content with stage fame, craved historical recognition. Holzer`s sharp, clear writing turns history into… [detailed...]

The President`s House (Random House Large Print)

Description: Book DescriptionAs Margaret Truman knows from firsthand experience, living in the White House can be exhilarating and maddening, alarming and exhausting–but it is certainly never dull. Part private residence, part goldfish bowl, and part national shrine, the White House is both the most important address in America and the most intensely scrutinized. In this splendid blend of the personal and historic, Margaret Truman offers an unforgettable tour of “the president’s house” across the span of two centuries. Opened (though not finished) in 1800 and originally dubbed a “palace,” the White House has been fascinating from day one. In Thomas Jefferson’s day, it was a reeking construction site where congressmen complained of the hazards of open rubbish pits. Andrew Jackson’s supporters, descending twenty thousand strong from the backwoods of Kentucky and Tennessee, nearly destroyed the place during his first inaugural. Teddy Roosevelt… [detailed...]

Description: Uncensored. Unrestrained. Un-politically correct. It`s a little-known fact that President Bush - known to his Instant Messenger buddies as `Kickass43` - has logged almost as much time chatting online as he has clearing brush at Crawford. Now this hilarious collection of imaginary online correspondence between the POTUS and pals sheds light and empathy on W`s tumultuous second term in office. Whether it`s dodging Harriet Miers after the fallout of her Supreme Court nomination, hosting a live online chat with the nation`s schoolchildren to disastrous effect, or the surprising late-night alliance with Bill Clinton (`Ladeezman42`) because both wish to keep Hillary out of the White House, you`ll never look at politics the same way again. Gleefully poking fun at political figures on both sides of the divide, `The President`s Secret IMs` is wickedly clever, deliciously irreverent, and in the words of Kickass43. [detailed...]

In this invaluable new book, the bestselling co-author of Raising Cain addresses America’s performance-driven obsession with the accomplishments of its kids–and provides a deeply humane response. “How was school?” These three words contain a world of desire on the part of parents to know what their children are learning and experiencing in school each day. Children may not divulge much, but psychologist Michael Thompson suggests that the answers are there if we know how to read the clues and–equally important–if we remember our own school days. School, Thompson reminds us, occupies more waking hours than kids spend at home, and school is full not just of studies but of human emotion–excitement, fear, envy, love, anger, sexuality, boredom, competitiveness.
