The Politics of Depression in France 1932-1936

— y.
Publisher: —
Description: The poor performance of the French economy in the 1930s has long been recognised as a major contributory factor in the decline of the Third Republic, which collapsed after the defeat of 1940. Although France entered the Great Depression later than the rest of the world, French governments failed to learn from the experience of other countries in combating it. This book is the first full study of the formation of economic policy in these crucial years, and of the political debate to which it gave rise. Itexamines the origins of the notion of planning and the `planomania`, which gripped France in 1934, and it shows why this solution was ultimately rejected. It also analyses in detail the arguments of pro- and anti-devaluers. The conclusion suggests that stagnation was to some extent chosen as a conscious policy, since at least until 1936 the Depression never seemed severe enough to threaten the social order. The Politics of Development Cooperation: Ngos, Gender and Partnership in Kenya (Routledge Studies in Development and Society, 4)

— y.
Publisher: —
Description: The Politics of Development Co-operation examines politics of inter-organizational development cooperation, exploring issues of power, autonomy, and dependence. Focusing on Kenya and in particular on Maendeleo Ya Wanawake (MYWO), the largest national women`s organization, and its partners in its relational environment, this book probes the relationships between foreign donors, grassroots development organizations and governments. Lisa Aubrey examines whether it is possible for the West and the developing world to be engaged in genuine development partnerships, and whether organizations such as MYWO are truly NGOs, as they claim to be, or whether they remain an extension of the state exploited by patriarchal party politics. The Politics of Developmentalism: The Midas States of Mexico, South Korea and Taiwan (International Political Economy)

2006 y.
Publisher: —
Description: Minns argues that the industrial transformations of Mexico, South Korea and Taiwan were based on the existence of powerful developmentalist states in each. It explores the origins of such states and their dynamics and connects the form of autonomy they enjoy within their countries to the policies they pursue. However, these so-called economic `miracles` have not and, it is suggested here, cannot continue indefinitely. The causes of the decline of the developmentalist state are already present at its birth. [detailed...]

The Politics of Deviance

2004 y.
Publisher: —
Description: Book DescriptionUntil the 1960s, sociologists had asserted that a willingness to identify deviance, or what constitutes appropriate behavior, was indispensable to the process of generating and sustaining cultural values, clarifying moral boundaries, and promoting social solidarity. Yet today, after three decades of lacerating debate, shifts in values and social relations, and questioning social authority, the subject has virtually disappeared from sociology`s radar screen. Deviance, in the famous phrase of Daniel Patrick Moynihan, has been `dumbed down.` In `The Politics of Deviance,` Anne Hendershott, a leading sociologist herself, tries to understand how this major change in the way we see our world occurred. How did we adopt such different views of human nature and personal responsibility? How did we `medicalize` what was once proscribed behavior? While in the past there was a moral consensus that conditioned our attitudes toward teenage sex, suicide, substance abuse, and… [detailed...]

And just what should we expect--and not expect--from the government in times of crisis? `Big government didn`t work,` says veteran journalist and political analyst Marvin Olasky. `And it is clear that a new paradigm for responding to national crisis has emerged. Private and faith-based organizations have stepped in and politics will never be the same.` [detailed...]

The Politics of Economic Development in Indonesia: Contending Perspectives (Routledge Studies in the Growth Economies of Asia, 9)

— y.
Publisher: —
Description: Since the 1970s, the Indonesian economy has boomed and is considered one of the world`s greatest success stories. It has also transformed Indonesian domestic policies in fundamental ways. Translating key speeches and articles from the political debates surrounding Indonesian development, Ian Chalmers and Vedi Hadiz present and analyze trends in development thinking by leading Indonesian figures over the past thirty years. They outline the three contending streams of thought that have long influenced policy making in Indonesia: economic nationalism, economic liberalism, and economic popularism. Tracing the evolution of these three ideologies, The Politics of Economic Development in Indonesia argues that Indonesia`s recent economic success has been accompanied by a growing diversity of views about future development policy. The Politics of Economic Restructuring and Democracy in Africa (Contributions in Economics and Economic History)

— y.
Publisher: —
Description: In a bold attempt to develop an innovative theory of political change arising from dual economic and political transformations, Iheduru maintains that economic structural adjustment policies have unintended political consequences, leading to democratic liberalization in post-colonial African states. Using classical, dependency, and neoliberal approaches as a backdrop, he demonstrates that structural adjustment policies shaped by conditionality measures foster the operation of free-enterprise market forces. As a social consequence of the reform effort, winners and losers organize to protect their interests, first in the economy and later in the political arena. Thus the structural reorientation of African economies leads not only to the ascendancy of the market and economic growth but also to the political opening of the African state, thereby facilitating the participation of excluded groups. The Politics of Free Markets: The Rise of Neoliberal Economic Policies in Britain, France, Germany, and the United States

2006 y.
Publisher: —
Description: The attempt to reduce the role of the state in the market through tax cuts, decreases in social spending, deregulation, and privatization—“neoliberalism”—took root in the United States under Ronald Reagan and in Britain under Margaret Thatcher. But why did neoliberal policies gain such prominence in these two countries and not in similarly industrialized Western countries such as France and Germany? In The Politics of Free Markets, a comparative-historical analysis of the development of neoliberal policies in these four countries, Monica Prasad argues that neoliberalism was made possible in the United States and Britain not because the Left in these countries was too weak, but because it was in some respects too strong. At the time of the oil crisis in the 1970s, American and British tax policies were more punitive to business and the wealthy than the tax policies of France and West Germany, American and British industrial… [detailed...]

Bringing a much-needed comparative perspective to the discussion, Judith Teichman examines the politics of market reform in Chile, Argentina, and Mexico, analyzing its implications for democratic practices in each case. Teichman considers both internal and external influences on the process of Latin American market reform, anchoring her investigation in the historical, political, and cultural contexts unique to each country, while also highlightingthe important role played by such international actors as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The Politics of Greed: How Privatization Structured Politics in Central and Eastern Europe (World Social Change)

2006 y.

Description: An in-depth political history of privatization in Central and Eastern Europe, The Politics of Greed demonstrates that the way that assets are privatized matters, both with respect to national economic performance and the successful development of the rule of law. Andrew Harrison Schwartz had unprecedented access to high-level Czech government officials during the Czech Republic`s privatization process. This book is the result of the unique insights he gained and the innovative analytical framework he subsequently developed ownership regime theory which for the first time places ownership structures at the center of analysis of political transitions. Engaging and important, this book applies ownership regime theory to a broad range of post-communist privatization cases, including those of the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Russia, and Ukraine. The Politics of High-Tech Growth: Developmental Network States in the Global Economy (STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS IN THE SOCIAL SCIENCES)

Description: Driven by high tech foreign investment, the `Celtic Tiger` economy in the Republic of Ireland was one of the economic `success stories` of the 1990s. This book argues, however, that the state played a central role in developing the Celtic Tiger economy as well, and particularly, the increasingly important Irish high tech industry. Typically seen as an example of successful market-led globalization, high tech growth in Ireland has actually been promoted by a new form of state intervention in the economy--one that fosters local networks of support through decentralized state institutions drawing on extensive local, national and global resources. The Politics of Humiliation in the Novels of J.M. Coetzee (Studies in Major Literary Authors)

2009 y.

Description: In this volume, Nashef looks at J.M. Coetzee`s concern with universal suffering and the inevitable humiliation of the human being as manifest in his novels. Though several theorists have referred to the theme of human degradation in Coetzee`s work, no detailed study has been made of this area of concern especially with respect to how pervasive it is across Coetzee`s literary output to date. This study examines what J.M. Coetzee`s novels portray as the circumstances that contribute to the humiliation of the individual - namely the abuse of language, master and slave interplay, aging and senseless waiting - and how these conditions can lead to the alienation and marginalization of the individual.
