Out of Minimalism: The Referential Cube: Contextualizing Sculptures by Antony Gormley, Anish Kapoor &, Rachel Whiteread

2003 y.
Publisher: —
Description: Book DescriptionThis Ph.D. dissertation involves a threefold investigation of sculpture. Firstly, the interpretations are focused on particular artworks by three British sculptors: Antony Gormley, Anish Kapoor, and Rachel Whiteread, respectively. The notion applied minimalism is tentatively applied to their sculptures. A primary argument is that these works are idiomatically, thematically, and theoretically founded on the heritage of American Minimalism from the 1960s. The sculptures by these three artists are seen as readings and transformations in themselves of the Minimalist sculptural idiom. Secondly, the dissertation aims at an investigation of the notion of sculpture, which is explored as a discursive term, i.e. as a working notion. This dissertation argues that the notion of sculpture, specifically in the wake of Minimal sculpture and the artworks inscribed by that category in art critical discourse, relies on the imperative or a corporeal acknowledged view/interpreter and that… [detailed...]

Out of My Mind

Description: Every Sunday evening, millions of viewers tune in to 60 Minutes to hear Andy Rooney riff on everything from coffee percolators to the state of the union. Millions more read his weekly newspaper column. Why? Because Rooney tells it like it is. But Rooney fans have never seen him quite like this. Andy Rooney is plain frustrated by what`s going on in America and the world. Why can`t Americans-let alone our president-speak English anymore? How do we expect to fight a terrorist enemy that we can`t even locate? And when did capitalism go so terribly wrong? This book isn`t all heady stuff, though. Readers will also get the familiar-and hysterical-Rooney gripes about everyday foibles, such as the impossibility of physically locating your driver`s registration, of purchasing a genuinely healthy breakfast cereal, or of enjoying a college reunion-unless everyone ends up in their nighties, that is. PublicAffairs is pleased to present its fifth collaboration with Andy … [detailed...]

Out of the Box: Strategies for Achieving Profits Today &, Growth Tomorrow Through Web Services

Description: Managers today are understandably skeptical of the promises of new technologies. During the 1990s, vendors of both enterprise applications and Internet platforms promised enormous benefits. Companies invested large sums, but the benefits either failed tomaterialize, or came at a high price. Managers sacrificed flexibility and struggled to collaborate with business partners?a crippling disadvantage in today?s marketplace. Now, leading business strategist John Hagel III has a refreshing message for managers burned by over-hyped technologies, yet pressured to find innovative ways to deliver more value with fewer resources. He focuses on a new generation of technology?known as Web services. This technology connects existing IT platforms in more automated and flexible ways, leading to much lower operating costs. The premise is practical and devoid of `change the world` promises. That very pragmatism, says Hagel, will drive enterprises to adopt it. In this book, he… [detailed...]

Description: Ten years later, the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill in Prince William Sound remains the largest tanker spill in the history of North America, and in its devastating effects upon wildlife and habitat, arguably the most damaging tanker spill in the history ofthe world. First released in 1991, John Keeble`s account, Out of the Channel, combined on-the-scene witnessing of the oil spill`s lethal results with analysis of its ramifications upon ecology, community, economy, law, the nature of public information, and upon the American mythos. The aftermath of the oil spill, and no less transforming, the spill of Exxon`s money and power, reached into every sector of Alaskan life as well as into the conscience of the people of the lower forty-eight states. The event is now seen as one of a handful of signal ecological disasters of the twentieth century. Professor Paul Freedman
Out of the East: Spices and the Medieval Imagination

2009 y.
Publisher: —
Description: The demand for spices in medieval Europe was extravagant and was reflected in the pursuit of fashion, the formation of taste, and the growth of luxury trade. It inspired geographical and commercial exploration ,as traders pursued such common spices as pepper and cinnamon and rarer aromatic products, including ambergris and musk. Ultimately, the spice quest led to imperial missions that were to change world history. This engaging book explores the demand for spices: why were they so popular, and why so expensive? Paul Freedman surveys the history, geography, economics, and culinary tastes of the Middle Ages to uncover the surprisingly varied ways that spices were put to use--in elaborate medieval cuisine, in the treatment of disease, for the promotion of well-being, and to perfume important ceremonies of the Church. Spices became symbols of beauty, affluence, taste, and grace, Freedman shows, and their expense and fragrance drove the engines of commerce and conquest at the dawn of the… [detailed...]

Description: Jimmy Hoffa is one of the most storied figures in American history, a rough-and-tumble Indiana native who became the head of the largest and most powerful union in twentieth-century America. More than a quarter-century after his mysterious disappearance, Hoffa’s legend lives on. Yet much of his life, and the significance of his public career, has remained obscured by myth or entirely unknown. In Out of the Jungle , historian Thaddeus Russell gives us a detailed, crisply written, and fascinating account of Jimmy Hoffa’s life and times, much of it previously untold. Russell argues that Hoffa was compelled by a variety of social forces to place the economic interests of his union members over broad ideological concerns. The most important of those forces was the demonstrated desire of ordinary Teamsters to improve their material lives. “What do you hire us for,” he famously asked a meeting of truck drivers, “if not to sell your labor at the… [detailed...]

2006 y.

Description: Kamal Shair`s book is a classic rags to riches story: the village boy, who with determination and education, achieves business success, wealth, more wealth, and then influence and power. What makes it unusual is that it emanates from the Arab world. Rarely among Arabs have individuals from thoroughly modest backgrounds, with no access to links, networks or connections become truly global commercial players. Shair was a small-town boy in what was then Transjordan who dragged himself through school (his mother was illiterate), moved to college in Beirut, then sailed off to America (Michigan and Yale) and returned to the Middle East to create a multinational corporate empire engaged in trade, construction and manufacturing. He did not follow the usual pattern of patronage and favours, but rather applied a fresh kind of ethic in an environment with an loosely-structured business ethic. In the process he lived through and witnessed at first hand and at close quarters some of the… [detailed...]
