Japanese Industrial Transplants in the United States : Organizational Practices and Relations of Power

— y.
Publisher: —
Description: This book examines the transferability of Japanese organizational practices to Japanese owned industrial transplants in the United States, and demonstrates that relations of power and conflict on the corporate structural level are equally as significant as the social and cultural differences between American and Japanese practices in the workplace. The research is based upon extensive ethnographic fieldwork at automotive transplants in the Midwest and high-tech transplants in California, as well as a case study company in New Mexico, and focuses primarily on their adaptation to the US industrial environment. Extensive interviews demonstrate that organizational practices of Japanese transplants are significantly different from either their Japanese or American counterparts. Relations of power at the case study company are examined in depth and reveal two contrasting forms of control. American managers tend to exert hierarchical control in the manufacturing department using a top… [detailed...]

The authors` research includes firms operating in the United States, Germany, Spain, Mexico, Italy, as well as countries in Southeast Asia. The continuing success of these firms provides a model for other countries and firms to understand and emulate. The contributors in this book demonstrate how Japanese multinationals manage the people in their overseas operations, which has wide-ranging implications for multinational performance as well as the performance of the local economies in which they operate. For example, when Japanese managers find a cultural conflict with local workers, they must learn to find ways to overcome this conflict in order for thelocal affiliate to succeed. Japanese Photobooks of the 1960s and 70s

2009 y.
Publisher: —
Description: The public profile of the Japanese photography book has recently boomed, from near-complete obscurity to great desirability. And not only for the aficionados. Photobooks that once were entirely unknown outside Japan (except to a few well-informed scholars and collectors) now sell at astronomical prices at auctions and online. And yet the photobook has been central to the development of Japanese photography, particularly in its postwar phase. To sketch the stages of this boom: 1999`s Fotografia Publica included just one Japanese photobook, Kiyoishi Koishi`s Early Summer Nerves of 1937, plus two photo magazines from the 1930s, Nippon and Koga, Andrew Roth`s The Book of 101 Books (2001) listed four seminal titles by Hosoe, Kawada, Araki and Moriyama, but it was not until 2004, with the first volume of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger`s indispensable The Photobook: A History, that it began to be clear what a rich body of work awaited excavation. Japanese Photobooks of the 1960s and 70s may be… [detailed...]

Japanese Popular Prints: From Votive Slips to Playing Cards

2006 y.
Publisher: —
Description: In the West, we tend to associate Japanese prints with the ukiyo-e tradition?prints based on the aristocracy, cultural heroes, actors, and the beautiful people of the time. These prints were (and are) considered to be fine art, using the highest quality of materials and immense time and skill. But behind the scenes, Japanese printmakers in the major cities were also catering for a working class culture, using intense speed and poor quality materials to create beautiful multicolored decorative papers, votive name cards, games, playing cards, gift envelopes, and paper screens. In this book, Rebecca Salter explores this tradition and also the work that is still being done today in this field. The result is a fascinating look at an exciting and beautiful art form.
