Description: Book DescriptionThe Army Air Force began August 1, 1907 as the Aeronautical Division of the United States Army Signal Corps. Six months prior to Pearl Harbor it had been renamed to the Army Air Force. It wasn`t until July 26, 1947 that the Air Force was established as a separate Service under the Armed Services Unification Act. At that time the USAF was not prepared, equipped, or trained to take over all of the duties of an independent Service. Certain Army units such as the Engineers that constructed and maintained air bases, Ordinance, Medical, and Signal were assigned to the USAF to aid its transition. These units became known as SCARWAF (Special Category Army with Air Force) and existed only during the few years 1949 to 1956 when the program ended. The 474th Signal Aviation Construction Company was one of these units assigned to the Far East Command. From the home base in Japan, highly skilled crews were sent to every part of the South Pacific, Japan and Korea on various… [detailed...]

2008 y.
Publisher: —
Description: No organization can survive without iconoclasts -- innovators who single-handedly upturn conventional wisdom and manage to achieve what so many others deem impossible. Though indispensable, true iconoclasts are few and far between. In Iconoclast, neuroscientist Gregory Berns explains why. He explores the constraints the human brain places on innovative thinking, including fear of failure, the urge to conform, and the tendency to interpret sensory information in familiar ways.Through vivid accounts of successful innovators ranging from glass artist Dale Chihuly to physicist Richard Feynman to country/rock trio the Dixie Chicks, Berns reveals the inner workings of the iconoclast`s mind with remarkable clarity. Each engaging chapter goes on to describe practical actions we can each take to understand and unleash our own potential to think differently -- such as seeking out new environments, novel experiences, and first-time acquaintances.Packed with engaging stories, science-based… [detailed...]

Icons and Saints of the Eastern Orthodox Church (Guide to Imagery Series)

2006 y.
Publisher: —
Description: An icon (from the Greek word `eikon,` `image`) is a wooden panel painting of a holy person or scene from Orthodox Christianity, the religion of the Byzantine Empire that is practiced today mainly in Greece and Russia. It was believed that these works acted as intermediaries between worshipers and the holy personages they depicted. Their pictorial language is stylized and primarily symbolic, rather than literal and narrative. Indeed, every attitude, pose, and color depicted in an icon has a precise meaning, and their painters--usually monks--followed prescribed models from iconographic manuals. The goal of this book is to catalogue the vast heritage of images according to iconographic type and subject, from the most ancient at the Monastery of Saint Catherine in the Sinai to those from Greece, Constantinople, and Russia. Chapters focus on the role of icons in the Orthodox liturgy and on common iconic subjects, including the fathers and saints of the Eastern Church and the… [detailed...]

Description: This historical survey covers some one-and-a-half millennia of Christian imagery and includes descriptions of selected masterpieces. The icons in this book come from the Icon Museum in Recklinghausen, which possesses the most extensive and highest-quality icon collection outside the Orthodox world. Icons do not depict `details` of the earthly world, but rather an unearthly reality. In accordance with their sacred function, the painters had to keep to venerable traditions. This historical survey covers some one-and-a-half millennia and includes descriptions of selected masterpieces, providing a graphic introduction to this fascinating world of images. While the book`s historical introduction traces the history of icon painting back to late Antiquity and the early Byzantine period, the examples in the picture section start with a 14th century Russian example and extend from the exquisite 15th century Byzantine icon `St Luke Paints the Mother of God` across the centuries to one from… [detailed...]

Publisher: British Museum Press
Description: When Matisse thus expressed his admiration for icons, upon a visit to Russia in 1911, he echoed the sentiments of viewers down the centuries. These painted panels made for Byzantine and Orthodox churches and as aids to prayers at home are perhaps the most effective and enduring form of religious art ever developed, and also perhaps one of the most mysterious. The peaceful, clear imagery found within them can be appreciated on both a religious and a secular level. This engaging book looks at icons in the context of the history of Christianity, examining all aspects of the production and power of this distinctive art form. Through numerous colour illustrations, it investigates their subject matter, showing how scenes can be identified, how the iconography developed over the centuries, and the role of portraiture. The ways in which icons were made, framed and displayed are also explored, based on an analysis of examples from the British Museum that have been carefully studied by… [detailed...]
