Geomechanical characterization of rock masses: Engineering geology in the Basque Arc (Basque Country, Northern Spain)

2010 y.
Publisher: —
Description: The development of instability, associated with road construction is the source of important problems, This situation appears to be related to three fundamental circumstances: A complex orography, an abundant rainfall and a large amount of tectonically disturbed sedimentary rocks. The development of unstable slopes depends on the combination of the rock massifs, their strength characteristics, structure, and precipitation- runoff relationship. Moreover,in coastal areas, there are a series of additional aspects which necessarily have to be taken into consideration: the particularly aggressive weathering processes on the coast and significant erosion along highly active cliff bases. This work attempts to improve the geomechanical characterisation of rock masses in the Basque Arc. These form a large complex of very different materials, usually weakened by different sets of joints, which makes it difficult to work with the usual classifications. These … [detailed...]

Geometric Algebra for Computer Science: An Object-Oriented Approach to Geometry

2007 y.
Publisher: Morgan Kaufmann
Description: Until recently, almost all of the interactions between objects in virtual 3D worlds have been based on calculations performed using linear algebra. Linear algebra relies heavily on coordinates, however, which can make many geometric programming tasks very specific and complex-often a lot of effort is required to bring about even modest performance enhancements. Although linear algebra is an efficient way to specify low-level computations, it is not a suitable high-level language for geometric programming. `Geometric Algebra for Computer Science` presents a compelling alternative to the limitations of linear algebra. Geometric algebra, or GA, is a compact, time-effective, and performance-enhancing way to represent the geometry of 3D objects in computer programs. In this book you will find an introduction to GA that will give you a strong grasp of its relationship to linear algebra and its significance for your work. You will learn how to use GA to represent objects and perform… [detailed...]

Geometric Data Analysis : From Correspondence Analysis to Structured Data Analysis

2004 y.
Publisher: —
Description: Book DescriptionGeometric Data Analysis (GDA) is the name suggested by P. Suppes (Stanford University) to designate the approach to Multivariate Statistics initiated by Benzecri as Correspondence Analysis, an approach that has become more and more used and appreciated over the years. This book presents the full formalization of GDA in terms of linear algebra - the most original and far-reaching consequential feature of the approach - and shows also how to integrate the standard statistical tools such as Analysis of Variance, including Bayesian methods. Chapter 9, Research Case Studies, is nearly a book in itself, it presents the methodology in action on three extensive applications, one for medicine, one from political science, and one from education (data borrowed from the Stanford computer-based Educational Program for Gifted Youth ). Thus the readership of the book concerns both mathematicians interested in the applications of mathematics, and researchers willing to master an… [detailed...]

Geometric Integration Theory (Cornerstones)

Description: This textbook introduces geometric measure theory through the notion of currents. Currents, continuous linear functionals on spaces of differential forms, are a natural language in which to formulate types of extremal problems arising in geometry, and can be used to study generalized versions of the Plateau problem and related questions in geometric analysis. The text provides considerable background for the student and discusses techniques that are applicable to complex geometry, partial differential equations, harmonic analysis, differential geometry, and many other parts of mathematics. Topics include the deformation theorem, the area and coareas formulas, the compactness theorem, the slicing theorem and applications to minimal surfaces. Motivating key ideas with examples and figures, Geometric Integration Theory is a comprehensive introduction ideal for both use in the classroom and for self-study. The exposition demands minimal background, is self-contained and accessible, and… [detailed...]

Geometric Programming for Computer Aided Design

Description: Geometric Programming is currently of interest in CAD (Computer Aided Design) and related areas such as computer graphics, modeling and animation, scientific simulation and robotics. PLaSM is a general purpose functional language to compute with geometry which the authors use throughout their text. The PLaSM language output produces VRML (Virtual Reality Modelling Language) files which are used to create virtual worlds. PLaSM blends the powerful algebraic approach to programming developed at IBM research, with a dimension-independent approach to geometric data structures and algorithms, This book shows that such geometric code can be surprisingly compact and easy to write.
