Frontier of Faith: Islam in the Indo-Afghan Borderland

2007 y.
Publisher: Columbia University Press
Description: `Frontier of Faith` examines the history of Islam-especially that of local mullahs, or Muslim clerics-in the North-West Frontier. A largely autonomous zone straddling the boundary of Pakistan and Afghanistan, the Tribal Areas was established as a strategic buffer zone for British India, and the resulting autonomy allowed local mullahs to assume roles of tremendous power. After Partition in 1947, the Tribal Areas maintained its status as an autonomous region, and for the next fifty years the mullahs supported armed mobilizations in exchange for protection of their vested interests in regional freedom. Consequently the Frontier has become the hinterland of successive, contradictory jihads in support of Pashtun ethnicism, anti-colonial nationalism, Pakistani territorialism, religious revivalism, Afghan anti-Soviet resistance, and anti-Americanism. Considering this territory is said to be the current hiding place of Osama bin Laden, there couldn`t be a better time for a sourcebook… [detailed...]

Frontiers in the Economics of Aging (National Bureau of Economic Research Project Report)

— y.
Publisher: —
Description: As America`s population ages, economic research related to the elderly becomes increasingly important to public policy. Frontiers in the Economics in Aging directs attention to four topics: the role of retirement accounts, such as IRAs and 401(k)s in personal saving, the economics of health care, new advances in research methodology, and aging in relation to inequality. Some of the issues analyzed within these topics are the implications of rising personal retirement saving in recent years, how health and health insurance affect labor supply, and the effects of pensions on the distribution of wealth. David Wise`s lucid introduction provides an overview of each paper. In addition to this book`s appeal for specialists and microeconomists, it offers immediately practical ideas and methods for shaping public policy. In fact, one of the papers in this volume, `The Taxation of Pensions: A Shelter Can Become a Trap,` helped to spur new legislation that reformed… [detailed...]

Frontiers of Broadband, Electronic and Mobile Commerce (Contributions to Economics)

2004 y.
Publisher: —
Description: Book DescriptionThe present volume analyses the frontiers of broadband, electronic and mobile commerce markets. High-capacity and intelligent mobile telecommunication networks have resulted in new services, such as SMS and Internet banking. Growth in mobile Internet network infrastructure and subscription has provided a base for the development of e-commerce. Accordingly, recent research on broadband networks is forward-looking, e.g., forecasting Internet telephony adoption and the structure of future retail markets. The broadband regime brings with it concerns of identifying appropriate standards and delivery for universal service. Regulation and pricing are matters of importance as well as appropriate investment decisions within a market of ongoing innovation. The volume is devided in five sections: e-commerce business models, network technology and productivity, demand and pricing, market growth, regulation and investment, and issues related to the development imperative. Frontiers of Economics: Nobel Laureates of the Twentieth Century

Description: Economics Nobel laureates are the pioneers of the science of economics. They are the most brilliant products of the discipline and have made enormous original contributions to the field of economics, and oftentimes history, political science, business, and other subjects. Their works, struggles, successes and failures are fascinating, and readers are given a glimpse into each laureate`s life, where and when they were born and raised, what schools they attended, and who influenced their intellectual development. Most importantly, each laureate`s often complex corpus of work is described as succinctly as possible without losing the work`s original flavor: what it contributed to the field, and how it was received by peers, and how it affected the world. A list of selected further readings concludes each entry, directing the reader to the primary and secondary works essential to understanding the works of these towering figures. [detailed...]

Frontiers of Evolutionary Economics: Competition, Self-Organization, and Innovation Policy

By moving away from traditional concerns with the operation of selection mechanisms towards a preoccupation with the manner in which the novelty and variety provide fuel for such mechanisms, the authors identify a key development in the field. Evolutionary economists have been drawn into the modern complexity science literature which attempts to provide an understanding of how and why ?complex adaptive systems? engage in processes of self-organization. The goal is to provide an integrated analysis of both selection andself-organization that is uniquely economic in orientation. After a brief overview of the many key achievements and continuing challenges, the first part of the book deals with theoretical perspectives, discussing… [detailed...]

Frontiers of Expert Systems: Reasoning with Limited Knowledge

Description: The development of modern knowledge-based systems, for applications ranging from medicine to finance, necessitates going well beyond traditional rule-based programming. Frontiers of Expert Systems: Reasoning with Limited Knowledge attempts to satisfy such a need, introducing exciting and recent advances at the frontiers of the field of expert systems. Beginning with the central topics of logic, uncertainty and rule-based reasoning, each chapter in the book presents a different perspective on how we may solve problems that arise due to limitations in the knowledge of an expert system`s reasoner. Successive chapters address (i) the fundamentals of knowledge-based systems, (ii) formal inference, and reasoning about models of a changing and partially knownworld, (iii) uncertainty and probabilistic methods, (iv) the expression of knowledge in rule-based systems, (v) evolving representations of knowledge as a system interacts with the environment, (vi) applying connectionist learning… [detailed...]

Frontiers of Illusion: Science, Technology, and the Politics of Progress

Description: For the past fifty years, science and technology?supported with billions of dollars from the U.S. government?have advanced at a rate that would once have seemed miraculous, while society`s problems have grown more intractable, complex, and diverse. Yet scientists and politicians alike continue to prescribe more science and more technology to cure such afflictions as global climate change, natural resource depletion, overpopulation, inadequate health care, weapons proliferation, and economic inequality. Daniel Sarewitz scrutinizes the fundamental myths that have guided the formulation of science policy for half a century?myths that serve the professional and political interests of the scientific community, but often fail to advance theinterests of society as a whole. His analysis ultimately demonstrates that stronger linkages between progress in science and progress in society will require research agendas that emerge not from the intellectual momentum of science,… [detailed...]
