Environment, Information And Consumer Behaviour (New Horizons in Environmental Economics)

2005 y.
Publisher: —
Description: Book DescriptionOver the past decade there has been growing interest in the role of information in the promotion of environmentally friendly behavior. This book examines how and why the provision of such information can affect individual decisions concerning buying or consuming a product or valuing a policy. The information can take the form of a product label or a statement in a survey questionnaire, and the decision can be what product to buy, what food to eat or how to answer a contingent valuation question. The chapters in this volume carefully explore the explanations for consumer behavior in different scenarios where information is provided about the `public` implications of individual decisions. The first set of chapters examines the prospectsfor eco-labeling as a tool of environmental policy from a variety of different perspectives. They also look at how this form of information provision compares with more familiar policy instruments in achieving efficiency goals. In the… [detailed...]

Environmental Accounting in Action: Case Studies from Southern Africa

2003 y.
Publisher: —
Description: Book DescriptionEnvironmental accounts bring together economic and environmental information in a common framework to measure the contribution of the environment to the economy and the impact of the economy on the environment. They enable governments to set priorities, monitor economic policies more precisely, enact more effective environmental regulations and resource management strategies, and design more efficient market instruments for environmental policies. Many industrialized countries compile environmental accounts, but progress in developing countries has been limited - even though the need for environmental accounts is perhaps more acute in these regions. Environmental Accounting in Action studies the experiences of Namibia, Botswana and South Africa, the core countries of a unique, regional environmental accounting program in Southern Africa. Covering minerals, forestry, fisheries and water, each chapter provides important lessons about sustainable resource management…. [detailed...]

Environmental Accounting in Theory and Practice (Economy &, Environment)

— y.
Publisher: —
Description: The global community is increasingly preoccupied with the concept of sustainability, to the extent that the traditional measure of gross domestic product (GDP) is giving way to a `green GDP`. Many attempts have also been made to measure the degradation of the environment and the depletion of natural resources. Environmental Accounting in Theory and Practice presents a comprehensive picture of the most modern research issues in the field, based on the experience of many countries with the introduction ofintegrated environmental and economic statistics, including physical accounting methods for material flows and spatial accounting for land use. Theoretical issues concerning the valuation of environmental goods and the concept of sustainability are also discussed. The 20 chapters in the book have been written by representatives of major international institutions, national statistical offices, research institutes and universities in Europe, the USA, Canada and Asia. Environmental Accounting, Volume 3: Commitment or Propaganda (Advances in Environmental Accounting &, Mgmt)

2006 y.
Publisher: —
Description: In the two years since the publication of the last volume of this series, the planet has witnessed some devastating environmental events some of which can be attributed to human causes. However, we have also seen the world uniting (except mainly for the United States and Australia) to reduce greenhouse gases and hopefully slowdown global warming. Recognizing that sustainable development is a way that can lead to well being of the society in the long run, most of the world has therefore agreed to ratify the Kyoto Protocol. There is hope that the USA and other industrialized countries will ratify the Protocol and all countries including China and India, which are exempt from emission cuts, will make efforts to reduce pollution emissions beyond the limit set by the Protocol. Economic growth in China and India is resulting in a rapid increase in the greenhouse gas emissions in those countries. It is especially important that plants in India and China use newer pollution… [detailed...]

Environmental Aspects of Textile Dyeing

2007 y.
Publisher: Woodhead Publishing Limited, CRC Press, The Textile Institute
Description: Textile dyes enhance our environment, bringing colour into our lives. The current range of dyes has been developed to withstand environmental effects, such as degradation by exposure to light and water. However, the industry involved with the application of dyes to textiles has a responsibility to ensure that potential for harm to the environment, for example through residues in waste-streams, and to the consumer is minimised. Written by an international team of contributors, this collection reviews current legislation and key technologies which make textile dyeing more efficient and environmentally friendly. The book begins by detailing European and US legislation relating to textile dyeing. Further chapters cover toxicology, environmentally responsible application of dyes and supercritical fluid textile dyeing. The book concludes with chapters on the reduction of pollution and minimisation of waste, the re-use of spent dyebath, chemical treatment of dye effluent and… [detailed...]

Environmental Assessment of Products - Volume 2: Scientific Background

Description: This major two volume work presents a new decision making tool which enables manufacturers and scientists to undertake life cycle assessment (LCA) of new products from the design and development stages. The methodology allows the environmental consequences of a product to enter into decision making in the same way as traditional commercial parameters such as price, quality etc. Significantly, it is in accordance with international consensus, as defined by SETAC (Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry) and ISO (International Organization for Standardization). Moreover, the individual steps have been made operational through the creation of a collection of tools for assessment. The books are derived from the Environmental Design of Industrial Products (EDIP) programme organized by the Technical University of Denmark and five leading Danish companies. Environmental Audit and Compliance: The Role of Audit Policies in Inducing Audit Adoption and Compliance Behavior

2008 y.
Publisher: —
Description: Compliance with environmental regulations in the US has traditionally been enforced through a system of monitoring and penalties. While the system has resulted in environmental improvement in air quality, violations of the Clean Air Act still occur. This book evaluates the effectiveness of environmental auditing and audit policies in the US in inducing compliance behavior of the firms. We find facilities that self-audit are more likely to be and stay longer in compliance with Clean Air Act regulations. Audit privilege and immunity policies have significant and opposite effects on facilities. While audit privilege policies reduce incentives for compliance, audit immunity policies significantly increase them, particularly for firms that have high costs of abatement and would otherwise have a higher likelihood of being in violation. Environmental Change and Globalization: Double Exposures

Description: This book explores the connections between two of the most transformative processes of the twenty-first century, namely climate change and globalization. In this book, Leichenko and O`Brien present a conceptual framework for analyzing the interactions between these two processes, and illustrate, through case studies, how these interactions create situations of `double exposure.` Drawing upon prominent recent and current climate-related events -- Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, recurring droughts in India, and the melting of Arctic sea ice -- the case studies each demonstrate a different pathway of interaction between globalization and global environmental change. Through exploration of these pathways of double exposure, the book also shows how broader human security concerns including growing inequalities, growing vulnerabilities, and unsustainable rates of development are integrally connected to both processes of global change. The double exposure framework not only sheds light on… [detailed...]

The book is the direct outcome of a NATO Advanced Research Workshop (ARW), sponsored by the Science for Peace and Security Programme (SPS), Salve Regina Unversity, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The book summarizes the collective work of both natural and social science disciplines in regard to how best address, mitigate, adapt, or acheve resilience in the face of changing environmental conditions.
