A Teacher`s Grammar: The Central Problems of English

1992 y.
Publisher: Thomson
Description: `A Teachers` Grammar` is the new revised edition of English as a Foreign Language - R.A.Close`s classic introduction to English grammar. `A Teachers` Grammar` introduces the fundamental concepts of English grammar to all teachers of English as a foreign or second language. It should be read by all teachers before they start explaining grammar in the classroom. While most grammar books list a mass of detail, Close argues that the grammar of English is a matter of relatively few, but very powerful, distinctions. `A Teachers` Grammar` is ideal reading for: Teachers on CTEFLA and DTEFLA courses, Trainees at teacher training colleges, Undergraduates preparing to teach EFL. A Teacher`s Guide to the Psychology of Learning

— y.
Publisher: —
Description: Of all topics within the psychology of education, learning is one of the most crucial. Yet in terms of practical texts likely to be of use to students and teachers, it is one of the most neglected. This book is a short, down-to-earth account of how children learn the knowledge and skills they acquire at school. Though it does not show teachers how to teach, it gives a highly practical account of learning, remembering and related processes. The first edition of this book was one of the first to present the ideas of the psychology of learning in an integrated text. This fully revised edition includes the psychological research into children`s learning and intelligence which has taken place over the past decade. The book is illustrated with non-country specific examples allowing course use around the world. A Teacher`s Guide to the Psychology of Learning is invaluable for students of psychology and education and for those training and working as teachers. [detailed...]

A Technical &, Operational History of the Liberty Engine

2009 y.
Publisher: —
Description: The aim of the Liberty was to standardize aircraft engine design. The theory was to have an engine design that could be built in several sizes and thus power airplanes for any purpose, from training to bombing. The differences in sizes would be obtained by using different numbers of cylinders in the same design. A large number of other parts would also be used in common by all resulting sizes of the engine series. The initial concept called for four-, six-, eight-, and 12-cylinder models. An X-24 version was built experimentally, and one- and two-cylinder models were built for testing purposes. The engine design eventually saw use on land, sea, and in the air, and its active military career spanned the years 1917 to 1960. In addition, it provided noble service in a multitude of civilian uses, and still does even today, some 90 years after the first engine ran. This book covers the complete history of the Liberty`s design, production, and use in amazing detail and includes appendixes… [detailed...]

A Theory of Efficient Cooperation and Competition

— y.
Publisher: —
Description: This book looks at competition in a new way. It attacks the notion that competition always leads to good results and that more competition is better. It also attacks the notion that cooperation is always harmful. An efficient economic equilibrium requires an optimal combination of both cooperation and rivalry. Telser first examines the genesis of certain late nineteenth-century laws that affected competition in the United States. Going on to give new theoretical insights into cooperation and rivalry, he shows when unrestricted competition can lead to an efficient equilibrium, as well as when restrictions on competition can provide for the same. The tensions between these two forces are especially pertinent to the study of innovation--the more costly it is to protect the property rights of ideas, the greater is the reliance on secrecy, and hence, the more likely is the wasteful duplication of results. A Theory of Forest Dynamics: The Ecological Implications of Forest Succession Models

2003 y.
Publisher: Blackburn Press
Description: To the human eye, a forest is a slowly changing ecosystem that, superficially, looks alike from one year to the next. This seeming quiet though is a balance between the tremendous progenerative potential of tress and an equally tremendous mortality rate. The intrinsic nature of the trees that comprise a forest make it all but impossible to collect complete data sets on the dynamics of natural forests and our understanding of the long-term dynamics of forests is based largely on scientific inference. Because of this reliance on inference, mathematical models of forest dynamics offer a valuable formalization of what we believe to be the important mechanisms involved in forest succession. Originally published in 1984, A Theory of Forest Dynamics is intended for scientists and graduate students in ecology and forestry. The book includes: a review of ecological succession, coverage of forest dynamics models and detailed analysis of several models of forest succession. Mathematical… [detailed...]

A Theory of Immediate Awareness: Self-Organization and Adaptation in Natural Intelligence

— y.
Publisher: —
Description: This book presents a realist, multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary theory of immediate awareness showing it is the most primitive cognitive network underlying all our natural intelligence. Including preattentive and attention processes, as well as primitive relations of the senses, imagination and memory, immediate awareness is a kind of knowing deeply embedded and interwoven throughout our multiple kinds of natural intelligence. It permits as well as drives our knowing how, our bodily intelligence. Against the Cartesian mind-body split found in earlier and current theories, the author shows how immediate awareness permits emergent properties of mind in multilayered primitive relations of touching and moving in bodily kinesthetic intelligence. Contrary to existing theories, she argues that sensation is not cognitively `neutral`, nor does it require a `representation` in order to be accessible to cognitive processes. Dr. Estep presents empirical evidence and arguments that sensation… [detailed...]

A Theory of Incentives in Procurement and Regulation

Description: More then just a textbook, `A Theory of Incentives in Procurement and Regulation` will guide economists` research on regulation for years to come. It makes a difficult and large literature of the new regulatory economics accessible to the average graduate student, while offering insights into the theoretical ideas and stratagems not available elsewhere. Based on their pathbreaking work in the application of principal-agent theory to questions of regulation, Laffont and Tirole develop a synthetic approach, with a particular, though not exclusive, focus on the regulation of natural monopolies such as military contractors, utility companies, and transportation authorities. The book`s clear and logical organization begins with an introduction that summarizes regulatory practices, recounts the history of thought that led to the emergence of the new regulatory economics, sets up the basic structure of the model, and previews the economic questions tackled in the next seventeen chapters…. Description: This book is concerned with dynamic relations between international division of labor, division of consumption and determination of prices structure within a perfectly competitive framework in global economy. Our analytical framework examines the issues related to trade which are raised in the traditional trade theories. It also provides insights into the issues related to interdependence between knowledge creation and utilization and international trade examined by the new trade theory. The comparative advantage of our theory is that in providing rich insights into the complex of international trade it only uses a few concepts and simplified functional forms and accepts few assumptions about behavior of consumers, producers and institutional structures.
