Development and the Challenge of Globalization

— y.
Publisher: —
Description: Amid a torrent of claims and counter-claims about the pros and cons of globalization, this book takes a critical look at the actors, institutions and processes that mediate the relationship between the forces of globalization and the poverty experienced by the majority of the world`s people. Drawing out dimensions often neglected in these debates, the contributors and editors emphasize three key facets of globalization: * the gender inequalities at the heart of any consideration of development and poverty * its relationship to processes of environmental degradation and the movements that have emerged to challenge them * the crucial role of micro-actors including small-scale producers and enterprises These themes are explored through astructured enquiry beginning in Part I with an examination of the consequences of globalization including environmental change, intellectual property rights and global trade. Part II looks at the shifting roles of key development… [detailed...]

Development by Consent: The Voluntary Supply of Public Goods and Services (Sequoia Seminar)

— y.
Publisher: —
Description: This book explores how myriad goods and services -- among them the generation and delivery of electricity, building and maintenance of roads, sewage and refuse disposal, water delivery, education, and transportation -- have been voluntarily supplied by individuals and groups in the absence of government mandates or sanctions. A recollection of the voluntary habit that predominated in nineteenth-century America stands in marked contrast to the expansive contemporary role of government in the United States and other countries, both industrialized and developing. Many additional examples conjoin in this volume to provide both leaders and citizens of debt-ridden governments with case experience of nongovernment alternatives for supplying sorely needed goods and services. An implication of the evidence in this volume is that the development of any country can occur as a result of expanding the consenting actions of its citizens -- in the absence of a growing government, or in spite… [detailed...]

Development from Below: A Namibian Case Study

2003 y.
Publisher: —
Description: Book DescriptionThis paper deals with aspects of rebuilding societies from below firstly in a general development studies discourse on a more theoretical level, considering aspects of the current debate on globalization. This is followed by a concrete case study from southern Namibia. It illustrates local responses by the Witbooi-Nama in Gibeon to (re-)define identity within the context of a (nation-)state in a post-apartheid society. The contributions reflect on the issue of social recon-struction in the context of (southern) Africa with reference to a particular marginalised group. They deal, among other things, with the question of social power and the `invention of tradition` in local efforts to gain from, or seek integration into, the nation building process. [detailed...]

Development in Valve-Regulated Lead-Acid (VRLA) Batteries

2009 y.
Publisher: —
Description: Although Gaston Plante invented the lead-acid battery in 1859 in France, it took about a century to make it maintenance-free in the sense that there is no necessity for topping up the battery with water. This was made possible by the invention of a hermetically sealed nickel oxyhydroxide-cadmium battery. Though such batteries were variously called in the beginning as maintenance-free battery, sealed battery, starved electrolyte battery, absorbed electrolyte battery, etc., due to heavy litigation, particularly in the U.K., the term valve-regulated lead-acid battery (VRLAB) was coined to obviate the legal battle. The VRLAB operates on the principle of `internal oxygen cycle` without resorting to the use of catalytic recombination plugs. The binary alloys used in the initial periods of development of VRLAB had no aluminium or silver. After the introduction of Ca-Al master alloy for preparing the Pb-Ca-Al alloy, the grid casting problems were minimised. The introduction of tin to… [detailed...]

Development of Controlled Low Strength Materials Using CKD

2008 y.
Publisher: —
Description: Cement Kiln Dust (CKD) is a voluminous co-generated product of the cement manufacturing process. This book presents the feasibility of incorporating CKD, from various sources, as a replacement for Portland cement in the development of Controlled Low Strength Materials (CLSM) with acceptable properties. The findings show that with a little Portland cement and moderate volumes of CKD a good mix that easily satisfies the requirements of CLSM can be developed. Suitable CLSM mixes can also be produced without Portland cement, using CKD alone. The latter mixes showed reasonable fresh and hardened properties, however, increased shrinkage was observed. Sustainable development in the cement industry can be achieved by producing CLSM with moderate volumes of CKD as it reduces the use of Portland cement and consumes a co-generated product that has little or no current use. This book should be useful to cement companies or anyone else in the construction industry that is interested in a… [detailed...]

The concluding chapters analyze the birth of late twentieth century developments such as game theory, experimental economics and competing schools of economic thought. This text includes a number of practical features: a `family tree` at the beginning of each section, illustrating how the different developments within economics are interlinked, the inclusion of readings from the original key texts, and, a summary and questions to discuss, along with glossaries and suggestions for further… [detailed...]

Development of Event-Based Pathogen Monitoring Strategies for Watersheds (Awwarf Report Series)

2008 y.
Publisher: —
Description: Threats from pathogens such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia are difficult to protect against, particularly without a clear understanding of the variability of pathogen occurence in space and time. A majority of data collected to date on pathogen occurrence in surface waters has concentraed on characterization of levels under average conditions. Data are lacking on pathogen variability in sub-basins characterized by different pathogen sources, during and following events such as rainfall, or following land use change. The objective of this project was to use sampling, analytical, and statistical methods to advance the current understanding on the variability of pathogen occurrence and transport through watersheds and to develop methodologies aimed at minimizing risk of waterborne disease outbreaks in drinking water supplies. Specifically, the objectives were to develop and validate a strategy for selection of sampling locations, frequencies, and methods to accurately depict occurence… [detailed...]

Development of Trust in Leadership

2008 y.
Publisher: —
Description: Few models of trust development have been empirically tested. This research explores the cognitive, character-inference process that Dirks &, Skarlicki (2004) assert contributes to trust development. Self-reported transformational leadership, leader integrity, organizational justice, and leader prototypicality correlated positively with cognitive trust in this sample of 81 student employees (63% female, mean age 20.5) of a large southeastern university. Leader prototypicality, a cognitive evaluation process, partially mediated the relationship between leader integrity and trust. This study`s prime contribution is the longitudinal, empirical test of a model of trust development in interdependent leader-follower dyads. This material is particularly relevant for those studying industrial and organizational psychology, business development, or human resource management. It may also be of interest to practitioners with a human resource or organizational development focus, and those… [detailed...]

Development of a Country is a Collective Effort: The Case of Ghana

2008 y.
Publisher: —
Description: Our case country Ghana, like many others in Africa, is characterized by, for example, mass poverty, huge foreign debts, poor socio-economic infrasturcture and entrepreneurial base, inability to meet the challenges of the forces of globalization, and heavy reliance on foreign loans and aid. Often times the development of the country has been the sole responsibility of a single entity, a government or a few ruling elites. It is argued in this book that to overcome the problems mentioned above, involving many actors (e.g. industry, government, universities, and the general public)will produce a collective effort, which will enable the actors to leverage their complementary capabilities to bring about a sustainable economic development. In this book we emphasize areas in which Ghana should invest now in order to effect sustainable development, which will translate into, example, poverty reduction, enabling environment for firms to emerge, grow and be competitive. Development of a Virtual Database Module

2008 y.
Publisher: —
Description: How can you translate complex information in real time from one computer language into another? In a virtual database a variety of databases form a system. For the integration of a new database with different language into the collective a logic has to translate the information. This practical work is part of the Edutella project which has the aim to create a peer-to-peer network for storing, querying, exchanging and processing any kinds of RDF metadata. The focus is on the development of a wrapper module for the Rssdb database. This wrapper provides the features for translating Edutella queries into the local language of Rssdb and for translating back the results from Rssdb. The author David Kuhn describes how this translation even works in real time efficiently. The algorithm is based on a decision tree. This tree decompiles the information piece by piece and constructs it again in the target language. The decision tree allows the process to be very fast even for information with… [detailed...]
